Pareto applied to pure-play vendors
Last week's news that Oracle acquired Hyperion has left me wondering whether in future IT there is still a place for pure-play vendors of specific solutions, alongside the vendors of enterprise applications.Hyperion was one of those pure-play vendors that focused on business intelligence and corporate performance management. The recent acquisition by Oracle has led to quite some speculation on whether BI pure-play vendors such as Cognos and Business Objects will be next. The same goes for other growth markets such as BAM (Business Activity Monitoring), BPM and service registries. Increasingly, the pure-players in these markets are under pressure due to the competition of large enterprise applications vendors such as Oracle, SAP and to some extent Microsoft and IBM. Increasingly, functionality offered by these pure-play solutions are incorporated into enterprise applications. In the past I have argued that this is happening also for ESBs, where functions that can be typically found in ESBs are incorporated either in enterprise applications (SAP and Oracle), in operating systems (Vista, Microsoft WF, and Microsoft WCF) or in hardware (intelligent switches).
So increasingly we see the trend that specific functionality is either placed in enterprise apps, the OS or in hardware. This should not come as a surprise, as generally speaking the Pareto principle can be applied to enterprise IT: capabilities that are needed in 80% of all enterprise environments, are likely to become commoditized. The remaining 20% are likely to be provided by non-commoditized systems.
Does this mean that in future IT there is no space for pure-play solutions and/or vendors? I am not sure about vendors, but I am pretty sure there will be a place for pure-play solutions. Although most pure-play solutions will be dealing with a niche market, the old Pareto 80/20 principle will apply here as well: the functions incorporated in enterprise apps, OS and hardware will satisfy 80% of all requirements, but for the last 20% still specific solutions are needed.

Good blog about the BI vendors. It seems to me that intelligence tools need to contiually move up the value-chain in an enterprise and currently they are not doing so. That's why the Oracle purchase. It's just like the Oracle purchase of Oblix and Collaxa. Those companies did good at establishing their base product's benefits but didn't move up from there. For Business Objects I would recommend they get into database and SOA governance tools next. Otherwise, IBM, TIBCO or BEA will likely gobble them up!
